Purdue ACM SIGBots is Purdue University’s VEX U robotics team established in 2010. Every year, we participate in the VEX U Robotics Competition, and we have qualified for the World Championships each season for the past fourteen seasons — for those of you counting, that’s every season since the club has been around!
This season, we set the goal of having a larger community impact. We started by expanding our service with the TechPoint Foundation For Youth and their coding help hotline for k-12 students. We also hosted 2 VRC competitions bringing a combined 900 students onto Purdue’s campus as well as our VexU competition being again the world’s largest with 30 teams from across North America. On the competition side, we moved back to 2 teams due to funding limitations but each team was stronger than in years past. We focused on uniform design elements & processes across the two teams as well as on our engineering design process. This culminated in our attendance at the World Championship where BLRS2 took home the Design Award, 10th in skills, and became the WORLD CHAMPIONS.
Building off the success of our previous season, we ventured this season into many more advanced techniques for building & programming our robots. We also expanded to 3 competition teams with BLRS3 being added to the roster. We also expanded our volunteering this year to include the hosting of our first VRC competition in early January which took place in Purdue’s Armory. Our 3 teams competed in Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, and at home in Indiana with the world’s largest VexU competition of the season (outside of the world championship) being hosted at Purdue with 24 teams from the US & Mexico. We experimented more with 3d printing, and added laser cut sheet metal to our design arsenal. We also developed an AI-powered vision tracking system for targeting with our robots using an Oak-1 camera on top of a stack of custom electronics to interface with the v5 brain. Utilizing a generous grant from the National Havoc Robotics League, the Purdue SIGBots were able to attend the Vex Robotics World Championship in Dallas Texas where we brought home the Think Award for our programming, alongside being the division finalists.
This season showed significant growth in the size and capabilities of the Purdue ACM SIGBots. As a result of our largest recruit class to date, Purdue SIGBots expanded to two competition teams, BLRS and BLRS2. With the winding down of the COVID-19 pandemic, Purdue University eased its restrictions on the number of individuals in lab spaces and masking. Subteam meetings returned to being in-person for the first time since 2020, giving new and existing team members alike the chance to meet and work in person. With new opportunities came new challenges, as funding became more difficult with the return to campus. However, SIGBots obtained a generous grant from Purdue University to attend the 2022 VEX U World Championship in Dallas, Texas, where BLRS placed second overall, and BLRS2 brought home the World Skills Champion trophy with a high score of 699 points.
This season started in the middle of the COVID 19 Pandemic and placed many restrictions on our ability to work on robots. Luckily, we were able to remain on campus but with a 5 person limit to the lab and no funding from the computer science department. Among other challenges, we have had to move our workflow to be almost entirely online but nonetheless we’re continuing to grow our program by increasing the scale of our robots with advanced programming techniques like odometry and advanced manufacturing techniques like machining metal.
Heavy emphasis on mechanics with a strategy solely focused on having the game won by the end of the autonomous period. We won every qualifier we went to and qualified 10 times for the World Championships. Due to the outbreak of COVID 19, a virutal worlds was held where we were named the 2020 Virtual Worlds Champions.
This season focused on creating a simple concept and optimizing it to its full potential. Our team took a non-meta approach to the season leaving the bulk of our scoring ability in one of our robots. This paid off as we won every qualifier we attended, qualifying for the World Championships 8 times. At the World Championships BLRS worked its way up to being the undefeated 1 seed in the Design division, later to be knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Having 1 robot per team, SIGBots were able to field both BLRS and BLRS1 this season. The approach of having a veteran team and a new member team did not prove to be beneficial to BLRS1. Using a subpar, off-meta design BLRS was able to qualify for worlds and ended up externally stacking their way to the #13 seed at worlds. This marked the first time BLRS has made eliminations at the World Championship
The SIGBots team grew significantly in Starstruck and a second team, BLRZ, was created. The highlight of the season was the BLRS vs. BLRZ finals match at the Purdue Qualifier. BLRZ qualified to worlds after winning the tournament but unfortunately BLRS was 6th in global skills, the highest rank to not get a worlds invite.
Nothing But Net was the first season with Lloyd, our hardworking 3D printer. This opened up a new set of possibilities for mechanical designs and made the custom gearboxes and flywheels on the robots possible.
The crowning achievement from Skyrise was the development of Four Is, a custom sensor designed to communicate between the two robots through infrared light. Four Is allowed the two robots to talk and coordinate during the autonomous period.
The 2013-14 season was one with a heavy emphasis on electronics and software development. The Watchdog Sensor received a form factor upgrade and the R.A.D.I.U.S. Array was created. These developments earned the team another Innovate Award at the VEX U World Championships.
The 2012-13 season marked the first release of PROS, along with a “hunting” algorithm and visualization tool for autonomous programming. These innovations earned the team the prestigious Innovation Award and a second place finish in the programming skills section of the VEX College Challenge World Championships.
The team placed second overall in the third annual VEX Robotics All-Star Challenge, earning the Tournament Finalist and Judges’ Award trophies.
The 2010-2011 season was the founding season of SIGBOTS and first time Purdue competed at the World Championships. This season was a large learning experience for the entire team adjusting to the college rules and fielding two robots. In the classic move all new teams make, a decision was made to rebuild a robot before the World Championship. This resulted in its autonomous code being developed and tested in the van on the drive from Purdue to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for the 2011 World Championships.
